Hongkong dollar, although it admittedly accentuates the
need for some adjustment of the kind recommended by the
Commission, 18 having such a detrimental effect upon the
trade of the Colony that in the opinion of this Association
many commercial and industrial undertakings will experience
grave difficulty in meeting demands for similar treatment,
which may be expected to arise as a result of the permanent
adoption of the Commission's recommendations.
These views were expressed by Mr. Stanley Dodwell,
the Chairman of the Association, during his interview with
Sir Gilbert Grindle on the 6th instant and, while I am given
to understand that Sir Gilbert Grindle considers it impossible
for the Secretary of State for the Colonies at this late date
to withdraw his consent and request that the proposals be
held in abeyance, I am desired by my Committee to express the
hope, for the reasons given above, that the recommendations
in the Report may be adopted as a temporary and not as a
permanent measure.
